Reflecting on the Rise of Computer Component Prices
“Sometimes I find I get to thinking of the past,” sang (or croaked) Leonard Cohen. Recently, I’ve found myself grappling with a wave of nostalgia, though my reflections are not driven by love lost, but by something far more poignant: the demise of affordable computer components.
I’ve spent much of 2026 caught between marvel and despair at the skyrocketing prices of essential computer hardware. Components like SSDs, RAM, and graphics cards have surged in cost, largely due to ongoing supply chain pressures fueled by an insatiable demand from burgeoning AI services.
This unfortunate trend has made upgrading your PC a prohibitively expensive venture—where once an upgrade of RAM was a budget-friendly enhancement, now it feels like luxury. The price increases have similarly affected laptops, gaming consoles, and smartphones, shattering decades of tech tradition where costs steadily decline over time.
A witnessing of the technology I cherish becoming increasingly expensive and inaccessible for many is disheartening. For instance, in previous console generations, we’d expect price cuts after six years from launch, making those devices attractive impulse buys.
Challenges in the Console Market
Consider the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Normally, by this stage in their lifecycle, we’d see a healthy second-hand market alongside price reductions, allowing gamers to save substantially. Yet, paradoxically, both consoles have experienced price increases in this generation, turning what should be a budget-friendly option into a more significant investment.
This predicament impacts my gaming decisions; the PS5 is likely the first PlayStation console I will not purchase. This price trend isn’t limited to consoles either. Recently, Apple raised the prices of its Macs and MacBooks. For example, the budget MacBook Neo rose from $599 to $699, dramatically affecting its value proposition.
Even the Steam Deck, once hailed for its outstanding value, saw sales plummet by an alarming 80% after Valve increased its price to $789. Given the context, I can no longer justify recommending it to buyers, as it now competes with budget gaming laptops that previously bore a warning label.
For many PC gamers, the notion of upgrading or building a new gaming PC feels like a distant dream; our current hardware must endure a few more years.
Alternative Upgrade Strategies
Nonetheless, does this mean we’re entirely relegated to outdated systems? Not necessarily. A host of non-memory-dependent upgrades can still breathe new life into our machines. For instance, enhancing your setup with a new monitor or game peripherals can bring noticeable improvements without breaking the bank.
Reflecting on my situation, I recently undertook a project to transplant one of my existing gaming PCs into a retro-style case while upgrading its cooling. One of the beauties of building PCs lies in embracing creativity and themes. I chose to honor a time when computing felt genuinely thrilling—the 1990s.
Cut to the Case
Given that my PC components were from an existing setup, I was fortunate to avoid the current price spike. Initially, I surveyed the following specifications:

Case: Fractal Design Vector RS Tempered Glass
While I have a more powerful gaming setup, evaluating the current specs in light of the 2026 RAM crisis, I perceived the existing configuration as underappreciated, with 32GB of DDR5 RAM and 2.5TB of storage feeling rather luxurious these days.
My primary goal was to replace the somewhat mundane Fractal Design Vector RS case for something exuding retro charm—enter the Thermaltake Retro 360 TG Mid Tower Chassis.
Exploring Retro Aesthetics
This case, designed to accommodate modern PCs, boasts a delightful beige hue reminiscent of 90s machines. While it features non-functional sections for a CD-ROM and floppy disk drive—mostly gimmicks—it lends the aesthetic allure of that nostalgic era while supporting contemporary hardware.
For cooling, I considered swapping out the existing Corsair iCUE H150i RGB ELITE Liquid CPU cooler to install the Thermaltake TH360 V3 Ultra ARGB Sync AIO Liquid Cooler. With an impressive LCD display reminiscent of old CRT monitors, this cooler serves dual purposes: keeping components cool and adding a visually engaging touch to the PC’s internals.
Preparing for the Switch
Once assembled, I prepared to make the transformation. Given I was transferring an existing build into a new case, some unique steps were necessary. The initial step was extracting the bulk of the components, retaining as much as possible on the motherboard.
After unscrewing the large CPU cooler, I removed the GPU and secondary SSD. Disconnecting case fans and I/O connectors followed, allowing me to finally extract the motherboard.
However, a hurdle presented itself when attempting to place the motherboard in the new case; some standoffs unscrewed during the initial removal. This required a bit of innovation, but with pliers, I was able to detach the standoffs before successfully securing the motherboard in its new home.
Finalizing the Build
Once everything was installed, I continued to plug in I/O connectors from the new case. A highlight was the pre-assembled front panel wiring, which significantly eased installation. Connecting the modular PSU involved securing cables neatly while ensuring compatibility with the components.
Adding extra Corsair RX120 RGB fans enhanced airflow, while the sophisticated iCUE LINK hub allowed for improved RGB lighting control, albeit complicating installation due to additional proprietary cables.
Crowning the Setup
After successfully booting the PC, I added finishing elements like retro stickers from Geekenspiel and paired the setup with an 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard and a Microsoft Pro IntelliMouse. These peripherals enhanced the nostalgia factor while ensuring modern functionality.
To complement the retro aesthetic even further, I attempted to mod Windows 11 to resemble Windows 95 using tools like WindowBlinds 11 and Start11 from Stardock. The process was labor-intensive, but I managed to transform my operating system into a nostalgic recreation.

Revamping the PC gave it new life, both visually and experientially. Even amid escalating component prices, I found joy in recapturing the fun of retro computing. Keeping hold of older components, repurposing them creatively, and embarking on thematic projects offer a balance between modern and retro innovations.
