FCC Crackdown Threatens DJI Drones and Broader Drone Market.

DJI, the leading drone manufacturer, has devised creative strategies to maintain its presence in the US market. However, these strategies are now attracting the scrutiny of regulatory bodies. Recent reports indicate that the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has intensified its investigation into several companies suspected of facilitating DJI’s continued sales in the country. These entities have been labeled as “DJI front companies” by industry analysts due to their close ties with the Chinese drone manufacturer, albeit operating under different brand names.

Among the companies under investigation are XTRA, a US brand known for creator-focused accessories and cameras, and Skyrover, which has associations with DJI drones. The FCC’s list of scrutinized companies also includes Cogito Tech, Fixaxo Technology, Lyno Dynamics, Skyhigh Tech, Spatial Hover, SZ Knowact, and WaveGo Tech. This growing list reflects the agency’s commitment to addressing potential violations related to radio equipment sales.

The FCC has reached out to these companies to verify whether they are selling radio equipment subject to existing restrictions. Reports indicate that these companies have not responded, prompting the FCC to consider financial penalties. The repercussions of these actions extend beyond regulatory fines; they could directly influence the availability of DJI-related products in the US market. Heightened national security concerns have led the FCC to tighten restrictions on Chinese telecommunications and drone manufacturers. In early 2023, the FCC broadened its Covered List to incorporate more foreign drone companies, complicating the certification process needed for these brands to sell wireless devices in the United States.

The regulatory scrutiny is not limited to drones alone. Products that integrate wireless hardware from companies on the Covered List may also face challenges entering the market. This is significant, given that DJI’s portfolio has expanded to include popular non-drone products like the Osmo Pocket series and other wireless creator gear that competes with brands like Insta360 and GoPro.

Additionally, there are reports that some FCC certification documents for the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Pro and XTRA products have recently disappeared from the agency’s database. While it remains unclear if this is a temporary issue or a consequence of the FCC’s recent actions, the potential revocation of approvals could significantly impede the introduction of these products into the US market. At present, current DJI devices are not at risk of immediate deactivation. However, this situation portends that any future launches—even those beyond drones—may face increased scrutiny and obstacles if they incorporate DJI technology. Creators, drone enthusiasts, and consumers anticipating DJI’s next camera release should remain vigilant.
