Microsoft Discontinues Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go: A Shift in Strategy

Microsoft has officially announced plans to phase out its low-cost Surface Go devices, marking a significant moment in their ongoing hardware journey. According to a report from Windows Central, both the Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go are no longer in production, and there are no successors or updates planned for the foreseeable future.

This news aligns with a broader trend of Microsoft reevaluating its Surface lineup, but for some users, there may not be much sentimentality to be shared. As someone who used the Surface Laptop Go extensively, I had mixed feelings about this announcement.

Reflecting on the Surface Laptop Go Experience

Originally marketed as a cost-effective solution for large-scale deployments in educational settings and businesses, the Surface Laptop Go aimed to be the ideal companion for professionals on the move. TechRadar, the platform I contribute to, received the device with optimism—especially for a journalist frequently navigating between meetings, conferences, and interviews.

However, my experience with the device was far from seamless. The key issues began with battery life, which was advertised as a full-day companion but rarely met those expectations. After just an hour of use, the battery would drain quickly—hardly ideal when attending a lengthy conference or conducting interviews on the go.

Another significant drawback was the device’s performance. Often, the Surface Laptop Go struggled to keep up with multiple browser tabs and applications. As someone who relies on multiple information streams, I often found the device overheating and the cooling fans working overtime, resembling a jet engine under pressure.

The display quality was another area where the device fell short. The low-resolution screen lacked brightness even at its highest setting, making it difficult to manage multiple tasks effectively. For a journalist, this was particularly challenging, as clarity is often essential for live reporting.

Additionally, the absence of a backlit keyboard proved inconvenient during situations like reporting in dimly lit environments, such as theaters or conferences. This seemingly simple feature can be a game-changer when typing furiously to capture key notes.

The Future of Microsoft’s Surface Lineup

Despite the discontinuation of the Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go, Microsoft is not stepping back from its commitment to the Surface line. The company has recently introduced new Surface Laptop Pro devices, which I have had the opportunity to test. Unlike their predecessors, these devices offer improved performance and a battery life that truly lasts throughout a demanding workday.

In conclusion, while the Surface Laptop Go and Surface Go will not be missed for their shortcomings, they served a purpose in guiding users towards more reliable options. For those of us who rely on technology to thrive, it’s essential to invest in devices that meet the demands of our work and lifestyle.
