Control Resonant: A Dazzling Sequel from Remedy Entertainment
Remedy Entertainment has achieved another milestone with the release of Control Resonant, an engaging and addictive sequel to the critically acclaimed original, Control. The gameplay mechanics from the first installment have been elevated to new heights, enhanced significantly through Nvidia’s cutting-edge technologies. This combination has made for an exhilarating visual and gameplay experience.
Immersive Gameplay Experience
In my two hours of gameplay, I quickly became fully immersed in the narrative and mechanics surrounding our new protagonist, Dylan. His incredible maneuvers and special attacks are complemented by a variety of fascinating environments, set both indoors and outdoors. Nvidia’s ray tracing technology plays a pivotal role in this immersion, offering stunning visual enhancements during the demo.
Simply put, Control Resonant is a visual treat, turning every encounter—whether in narrow hallways or expansive outdoor arenas—into a feast for the eyes. The game is vibrant and colorful, where enemy designs beam bright with red hues, particularly significant as the primary antagonists, known as the Hiss, are largely red-themed. The artistic direction of the game truly blew me away, showcasing the potential for rich environmental storytelling.
Shifting Gameplay Dynamics
Unlike its predecessor, Resonant shifts away from the traditional third-person action-shooter format, embracing third-person fast-paced action-role-playing elements. My brief experience has left me eager for more, particularly excited to see how the PC port will unfold later this year.
Ray Tracing Technology: A Double-Edged Sword
The inclusion of Nvidia’s ray tracing technology in Control Resonant is impressive but comes with performance demands that some gamers may find challenging. Running the game on an RTX 5090 at 4K with DLSS 4.5 Performance enabled and ray tracing preset on high, the game felt smooth throughout most combat sections. Although there wasn’t a frame rate counter present, I suspect it hovered around or above 60 frames per second (fps).
As a fan of hack-and-slash titles like Devil May Cry 5 and the original God of War trilogy, maintaining 60 fps during intense combat is crucial. Resonant shares similarities with these titles, and I did notice some occasional frame dips below 60 fps, particularly during more demanding scenes.
Balancing Quality and Performance
With the early build of the game demanding significant resources, it’s essential to consider general system requirements. Control Resonant is touted to be run efficiently on a varied range of hardware. However, ray tracing or full path tracing may not be feasible for all systems, making performance management crucial.
The demo did not utilize DLSS Frame Generation, but based on preliminary system requirements, expectations for smooth gameplay should remain high. Although some systems may struggle under heavy ray tracing demands, even without these features, the game remains visually impressive.
Visual Quality and Future Optimizations
There’s still plenty to explore in Control Resonant, a sequel that has undeniably elevated its environments and locations. I am eagerly anticipating delving deeper into more intricately designed areas when the game launches on September 24, 2026, across PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
Despite some minor performance issues, the visual effects powered by DLSS 4.5—offering improved sharpness over its predecessor—prove worthwhile. The performance loss on RTX 3000 and 2000 series GPUs may pose a concern, but considering the magnificent visuals, it’s a trade-off many players may happily accept.
Given the current trajectory of Remedy Entertainment combined with Nvidia’s superior technology, it’s clear that Control Resonant is set to redefine what gamers can expect from visually rich and narratively engaging experiences.
