Discovering the Track: A New Frontier for Runners
Many cities and large towns—especially those with college or university atmospheres or outdoor sports centers—feature an oval 400-meter running track that’s accessible to the public. In large cities like London, you can find several of these tracks, creating ideal spaces for both competitive and recreational runners alike.
I have spent years using top-of-the-line Apple Watches to test their features during running workouts. However, I have never been an avid track runner. My preference leans towards long, gentle runs that allow me to enjoy diverse scenery. Yet, the allure of the track called to me.

Recently, Apple Watches have utilized GPS and Apple Maps to automatically identify when you are near an oval track. Once you initiate an Outdoor Run workout nearby, the Workout app prompts you to start a track workout, an impressive feature not found in any other smartwatch, according to an Apple spokesperson. Most users wouldn’t even realize this capability exists unless their route happens to coincide with a track.
Upon selecting Track Workout, you can choose your lane by swiping left for more accurate tracking. The app permits lane adjustments during your workout, allowing flexibility as you navigate the track. You can also utilize the segment button to mark laps or distances, such as the 200-meter interval I employed during my workout. This feature streamlined my experience, allowing me to focus solely on my performance.
Apple’s seamless integration across its devices makes it simpler for users to engage with the technology. While some may find the closed-loop ecosystem a hindrance, it facilitates an easy user experience for those fully invested in Apple products.
Leveraging the availability of features like GPS detection allows the Apple Maps app to work with the Workout app to intuitively understand your likely intention to train on a track. Personally, as I transition into more consistent use of Apple products, I continue to be impressed by these small yet significant features. This functionality has motivated me to incorporate more track workouts into my training regimen.
Why Incorporate Track Training?
According to a report from the University of Warwick, track training—whether for sprints or longer distances—offers a “controlled environment,” enhancing personal performance. The predictability of distance and pace without external elements such as traffic or elevation changes provides a solid backdrop for refining your running technique, including cadence and stride.
Training on a track hones mental resilience, akin to working out on the finest treadmills. The repetitive nature of running loops fosters a unique mindset, as it requires a specific type of dedication to maintain focus while running in circles for extended periods.
