Microsoft Rolls Out Xbox Mode for Windows 11 Users
Microsoft has officially begun rolling out its Xbox Mode for Windows 11 desktop PC users, a move aimed at enhancing the gaming experience on this operating system. Announced via Xbox Wire as part of the latest April 30 update, Xbox Mode offers a streamlined interface for gamers, previously known as Full Screen Experience. This feature has been in testing since November 2025 for Xbox Insiders, and its broader availability marks a significant step forward for Microsoft in the gaming domain.
What is Xbox Mode?
Essentially, Xbox Mode serves as a gateway for gamers to easily launch their games while optimizing system resources. By disabling unnecessary background processes, Xbox Mode frees up RAM, ensuring that games run smoother and with improved performance. This innovation positions Xbox Mode as Microsoft’s answer to SteamOS, consolidating gaming activities within a single menu for greater user convenience.
Introducing Auto SR Upscaling
In addition to Xbox Mode, Microsoft has also rolled out a new feature dubbed Auto SR (Super Resolution) for Asus ROG Ally X Xbox Insiders. This feature, which can be activated through Game Bar, operates similarly to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR technologies. By rendering games at lower internal resolutions and then upscaling them, Auto SR enhances frame rates while delivering sharper image quality, a boon for gamers seeking a better visual experience.
To enable Xbox Mode, users can navigate to Settings > Gaming > Full Screen Experience and set the home app to ‘Xbox.’ Once activated, Xbox Mode can easily be toggled through the Game Bar or Task View, providing instant access for gamers eager to dive into their favorite titles.
The Timing of Microsoft’s Rollout
With Valve’s SteamOS updates on the horizon—preparing for the upcoming Steam Machine—Microsoft’s timing couldn’t be better. While Xbox Mode is still in its infancy and has much to achieve to compete with other dedicated gaming platforms, it offers an attractive option for users hesitant to transition fully to alternatives like Linux.
Although there has been no announcement regarding Auto SR availability for desktop PCs, it remains a possibility for the future. For now, Microsoft continues to pioneer improvements that cater to the evolving needs of both desktop and handheld gamers.
