The Build: Features and Specifications

Reddit user OkDebate6649 shared their ambitious project, detailing how they designed the Lego PC chassis in a modular fashion. According to OkDebate6649, this design allows compatibility with previously made monitors and even includes a built-in keyboard.

The heart of this Lego creation is an AMD BC-250 motherboard, initially intended for cryptocurrency mining. This motherboard features a downscaled version of the PlayStation 5’s APU, which consists of six Zen 2 CPU cores and 24 RDNA2 compute units in the GPU, accompanied by 16GB of memory. The overall performance is comparable to an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, making it suitable for 1080p gaming at medium to high settings.

Although not the most powerful gaming rig available, OkDebate6649 stated that it operates stably, running at approximately 75°C during use (and around 45°C while idle). This impressive temperature management has garnered a lot of admiration from fellow Reddit users, with many commenting that the build is “ridiculously wild” and “absolutely sick.” One user, Lorenzo_95, humorously noted, “I’m afraid you have to stop posting, you’re too cool; it’s unfair on the rest of us.”

Operating System and Design Inspirations

Interestingly, the BC-250 motherboard requires users to run a Linux operating system, as it is not compatible with Windows 11. OkDebate6649 cleverly customized the Linux interface to resemble Apple’s macOS, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

Emphasizing nostalgia, the entire Lego housing mimics the appearance of an old-school Macintosh computer from the late 1980s and early 1990s. The build features a cuboid Lego box as the computer’s main unit, with the monitor — also crafted from Lego — positioned atop. Retro Apple elements, such as an old logo and rainbow decal, further connect the design to vintage Apple products.

Construction Challenges and Solutions

Given that the BC-250 is a repurposed mining board, OkDebate6649 faced unique construction challenges. Traditional CPU coolers were incompatible with this unique setup, prompting the creator to remove the motherboard’s heatsink. Instead, they positioned a 120mm fan directly on top. The completed system, consisting of the keyboard and monitor, weighs about 11kg, which limits portability.

Concerns about the Lego chassis’ ability to withstand heat were addressed by the creator, who added protective measures in heat-prone areas. In the documentation, they pointed out that special protective materials were applied where the motherboard backplate meets contact surfaces, showcasing careful planning in the build process.

Embracing Creative Computing

This Lego PC build is just one example of the flourishing creativity in the computing community. Achievements like these provide inspiration for others interested in custom PC construction, showing that the possibilities are practically limitless. With imaginative builds such as this and recent innovations like the “Superdome” Noctua computer, it’s evident that enthusiasts are redefining the boundaries of personal computing.
