Samsung has officially rolled out its much-anticipated blood pressure monitoring feature for Galaxy Watch users in the United States as of March 31. This development allows select Galaxy Watch owners to measure and track their blood pressure directly from their wrists through the Samsung Health Monitor app, available for download in both the Play Store and Galaxy App Store.
Samsung’s blood pressure monitoring feature has been available in South Korea for several years, leaving many U.S. users eagerly awaiting its arrival. Now the wait is finally over.
How It Works
The blood pressure monitoring feature utilizes the Galaxy Watch’s internal heart rate sensors to measure systolic and diastolic blood pressure along with heart rate. However, users will need to calibrate the watch with a traditional upper arm blood pressure cuff every 28 days to ensure accuracy. It’s important to note that this cuff is sold separately.
This new capability is compatible with Galaxy Watch 4 and newer models running Watch OS 4.0 or higher. Additionally, it requires pairing with an Android phone running Android 12 or above. Once your watch is connected to a Galaxy phone, you can download the Samsung Health Monitor app, enabling access to this feature.
Why This Matters
This feature is especially important considering public health statistics: approximately 120 million adults in the U.S. suffer from high blood pressure, which accounts for nearly half of the adult population. Having a convenient way to monitor blood pressure from a wearable device like the Galaxy Watch could empower individuals to take charge of their health.
Furthermore, Samsung continues to expand its range of health features on the Galaxy Watch, including FDA-authorized sleep apnea detection, ECG readings, and irregular heart rhythm notifications. The company has also announced that passive blood pressure trend monitoring will be available later this year, further enhancing the value of its wearable health technology.
The Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic, both equipped with this new health feature, are currently available for purchase on Samsung’s official website.
